Personnally I'm pretty fricking pissed that there is a unprecedented nuclear distaster occuring right now and it is VERY diffult to find any news about it in the media...So I went looking and found this site: http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/2011/fukushima030411.html
Its a daily report and chronicles from 3/11 onward. I don't know how accurate it is but its the best I've been able to find.... Please don't sit there and consider this "normal". Its very scary that there was more outrage from oilspills and lindsey lohan than whats going on in Japan... Look at the numbers posted there...70,000 tonnes of high level nuke waste water they think is in a basement bunker. They ar still dumping at least 5 cubic meters of highly toxic water into the pacific every hour... Use it in your discussions to convince people that nuclear is not the anser but hydrogen is.
CNN continues to have updates on their website (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/2011_japan_disaster) however I'd agree that for the most part this got pushed into the background quickly. I for one think this is far more important a topic than the killing of Osama Bin Laden or the wedding in England...
As sad as it is it seems to take a disaster such as this before most are even willing to entertain a logical discussion about the merits of nuclear power. Yes, I agree that the liklihood is very low; however the impact is very large - similarily we could discuss the impact of our extensive usage of hydrocarbons as an energy source.
I too had trouble finding out what was going on after the initial reports. Thanks for the links guys. It blows me away how much people think nuclear is the way to go. This is just one reason not to use nuclear, for me the hundred thousand half life does it for me.

Well, it all depends on what kind of radiation we're talking about - the half life of iodine is only ~8 days (though it should be noted radioactive iodine can create severe health risks for children).
I wont go as far as to say that I'm completely against nuclear, but I do think there are far too many that see it as a panacea for our impending energy needs.
I would think that the safety advantage of the pebble bed reactor might be a plus, but I don't know enuf about the spent fuel issue to be in favor of it.
There is no confusion in it that you share the good and valuable information with me but it is also important to note that we should not share this information to create the terror among the people.
